The idea for this blog, The FAM: Female Athletes Matter, orginated as a double entendre. First of all, I wanted to write about my favorite subject, women and girls in sport. Second, I wanted this blog to serve as a reminder that females are legitmate athletes and should be recognized, promoted and celebrated as such. But after coming up with the title “Female Athletes Matter” I realized that the acronym spelled FAM. And wouldn’t you know, the world of women and girls in sport is a sisterhood. So the title and the concept merged into one fantastic, seemingly pre-destined blog. As a result, we have this wonderful triple entendre which can mean different things to different people. And that is great. Something for everyone. As an aside, as a former college athlete, for some reason, I seem to recall that all of our pre-game warm-up mixes had the classic Sister Sledge song “We Are Family” on it. You had to be there. Or perhaps, you understand. Because if you’re a female athlete yourself, or you coach females, or if you are a fan or a parent, then you get it. Female athletes matter.
What a captivating story! I doubt Jess will remember her first Varisty Lacrosse experience for a long time as mentioned; she will remember it for the rest of her life & draw inspiration from it! Great job Coach!
